Split rewards a slow week, but plenty of travellers get only a day — off a cruise ship, between ferries, or on a quick city break. Good news: the old town is small, walkable, and packs a Roman palace, a market, a hill and a swim into a few hundred metres. Here’s how a local would spend one perfect day, hour by hour.
8:00 — The palace before the crowds
Start early, while the stone is still cool. Walk into Diocletian’s Palace through the Bronze Gate and up into the Peristyle, the Roman courtyard at its heart, before the tour groups arrive. Order a coffee on the steps and have the 1,700-year-old square almost to yourself. (For the whole story, see our local’s guide to the palace.)
9:30 — Bell tower & the Pazar
Climb the cathedral bell tower for the rooftop view — narrow stairs, big reward. Back down, slip out the Silver Gate to the Pazar, Split’s open-air market, for a bag of cherries or figs to carry through the day. (More on the markets in our Pazar & Peškarija guide.)
11:00 — Veli Varoš & a first sea view
Cross to the west side and wander up into Veli Varoš, the old fishermen’s quarter of stone lanes and green shutters. Climb a little and you’ll catch your first proper view of the islands. This is the Split the day-trippers miss.
13:00 — A konoba lunch
By now you’ve earned a long lunch. Find a small konoba in the lanes, order grilled fish or peka, blitva on the side, and a carafe of house white. (Our konoba guide points the way.) Don’t rush — this is the point.
15:00 — A swim
Walk lunch off with a swim. Bačvice, the sandy bay just east of the centre, is closest and most fun — watch the locals play picigin. For clear water under pines, head west to Kašjuni below Marjan instead. (See our swimming guide.)
19:00 — Sunset on Marjan
As the heat softens, climb the stone stairs from Veli Varoš up to Vidilica, the café-terrace looking back over the whole old town. It’s the best free seat in Split for golden hour. (More options in our sunset guide.)
21:00 — Dinner, then the Riva
Come down for a late Dalmatian dinner, then join the evening passeggiata along the Riva — the palm-lined waterfront where the whole city strolls after dark. End with a drink on the breakwater at Matejuška, feet near the water, and call it a perfect day.
One day is never enough
If this leaves you wanting more — and it will — stay a while. Our apartments in Split’s old town put all of the above within a few minutes’ walk, so your second day can be slower than your first.
